‘Happy Death Day’ Uses Classic Horror Tropes to Create an Effective Horror Comedy

Blumhouse brings us a new original rewinding horror thriller in HAPPY DEATH DAY. Think GROUNDHOG DAY meets horror comedies from the 80’s and 90’s. A college student (Jessica Rothe, La La Land) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.

It features campy elements that we saw in Shant Hamassian‘s NIGHT OF THE SLASHER where the main character makes a list of suspected killers and then checks things off one by one as she finds new ways to die before waking up each day and starting the nightmare all over again. Spoofing films like VALENTINE and THE STRANGERS, HAPPY DEATH DAY has a killer that sports a doll face mask and a black hoodie.

This looks like a fun horror comedy just in time for the Halloween season that coincidentally comes out on Friday the 13th in October.

HAPPY DEATH DAY is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell and Landon.
