A great trailer will give you just enough to chew on and be intrigued. It’s a fine art. While they cram a lot into the debut official trailer for The Dark Tower to setup the premise they also threw in a couple of fantastic Stephen King Easter Eggs for fans to chew on.
Many comic book films revolve around cinematic universes carrying story lines and characters from one blockbuster movie to the next. It’s rare to see to many connective tissues in the Stephen King lore other than the setting the story takes place in. But in ‘The Dark Tower’ trailer we see a subtle and not so subtle nod to an upcoming film and a fan favorite.
First up, a nod to one of Kings’ most creepy characters, Pennywise. The IT re-imagining will be hitting theaters this fall but we get a not so subtle tip of the hat to this iconic character. Will we see the facade in the upcoming film restored to form or will it be the same run down structure from days gone by? Time will tell but it’s incredible cool to see it pop-up in the new trailer.
The other Stephen King reference is more subtle. Look closely at the picture sitting on a desk. It’s the Overlook Hotel from The Shining. Pretty cool huh?
So what exactly is The Dark Tower about? The story revolves around Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), an young 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), who is on a quest to reach the ‘Dark Tower’ that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save Mid-World from extinction. But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.
