If you were a child of the 90’s like me, then you will have no problem remembering the 1-900 numbers that feed on the phone bills of parents with kids offering up EXCLUSIVE content for just $2 for the first minute and 45 cents for each additional minute. From the likes of WWF’s “Mean” Gene Okerlund to the Corey Haim and Corey Feldman fan hotline. Nothing was off limits.
So it was a natural fit to give Freddy Kruger his own 1-900 Number to read you bedtime stories that would give you nightmares. As one of the cornerstones of horror, Freddy easily became the most marketable icon amongst the bunch. He was all over the place. Will Smith rapping about him. Custom Nike sneakers. You name it and if it made sense (or didn’t) companies found a way to make the most out of Fred.
Composer, Dwayne Cathey,(GLOW: The Story Of The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) uploaded 45 minutes of Freddy stories, fresh from his boiler room. They play out like two-minute campfire tales that wouldn’t feel out of place in Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (another great throwback from our childhood!)
While Freddy doesn’t tell you the story himself he does provide an intro that is full of puns and cheeky sayings we all grew to love. Check out a few stories below and share you memories of your favorite 900-numbers in the comment section!
