After its successful showcase at PAX East and Steam Next Fest, cosmic horror Dark and Deep will launch on August 13 on Steam. Solo developer Walter Woods’ experimental first-person horror game follows Samuel Judge, an avid fan of the conspiracy podcast ‘Dark and Deep’. However, while trying to defraud his employer, Samuel spirals into a terrifying encounter with a paranormal government conspiracy and otherworldly realm.
As if being in a nightmarish world wasn’t enough, a menacing figure and invisible shadow creatures begin to hunt Samuel. In order to survive the nightmare, he must equip mystical frames to uncover the secrets around him. What’s even stranger is the connection of his beloved podcast to the nightmare unfolding around him. Samuel must piece together the fragments and link together the events to survive the harrowing journey. Solve physics puzzles, manipulate gravity, and whatever you do: don’t let the shadows steal your light.
The developer drew inspiration from two unique visuals for their hand-crafted game. The black and white contrasting art and texture comes from 19th-century artist Gustave Dore known for his mythological and historical scenes. Meanwhile, its narrative is a lovechild of A24 movies like The Lighthouse, Midsommar, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Dark and Deep will release August 13 for PC via Steam. A demo is now available.
