Mortal Kombat 1’s Full Character Roster Gives Players Something Old and Something New

Fans are on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the new Mortal Kombat 1 game’s upcoming release. Although plenty of characters will return to the new MK Universe, the announcement of its first DLC content made waves. Although the wait is just a little longer, returning players are relieved to know the starting roster was revealed. MK 1 will hit the shelves with a satisfying bone crunch on September 19th. You better warm up those muscles if you’d like to avoid heartbreak – or in this case, spine break – depending on your opponent.

The most shocking announcements are the inclusion of three external characters within the Kombat pack. Omni-man, the dad and superman-like hero from Invincible is flying into the fight! That’s not all, accompanying him is his counterpart character Homelander from The Boys, as well as DC’s Peacemaker which recently received a show starring John Cena. All of these earthly defenders are known for their unique renditions of superhero tropes, instead supplementing peace with violence. All these franchises hone in on the horrors of superheroes, and familiarity with gore prepared them to finish this.

Aside from those starlets taking the DLC spotlight, returning players will recognize these other 3 additions. Though they haven’t made an appearance since Mortal Kombat X – Ermac, Takeda, and Quan Chi are all being brought back this cycle. They of course aren’t the only ones returning once again to take their place on stage.

Base Fighters

Aside from an additional pre-order bonus character, 15 playable fighters are on the base roster. The default lineup will include a plethora of classic characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Smoke, Rain, Johnny Cage, Baraka, Geras, Raiden, Kenshi, Kitana, Kung Lao, Li Mei, Liu Kang, Mileena, and Tanya. To accompany this exciting roster, preorders of the game will include Shang Tsung. While there are many big names returning, fans will notice a long list of absences from previous titles. While some combatants may stay away from the arena, there are several who are available as Kameo Fighters to assist you in your death match.

Kameo Appearances

Although Scorpion and Sub-Zero are on the roster, other Kameo appearances will bring more of this universe to players’ hands. On release, Cyrax, Frost, Goro, Darrius, Jax Briggs, Kano, Kung Lao, Sektor, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, and Stryker will all be available.

Forgotten Souls

Although we will likely see the inclusion of other characters in the future, as of the game’s release this is the confirmed roster. One character we can more or less guarantee won’t appear, however, is the new movie’s character Cole Young. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Lead Systems Designer Derek Kirtzic stated that “We’re leaving that world to that world,” when asked about Young’s inclusion after Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be available for purchase on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through both Steam and Epic Games.
