George Miller, producer, co-writer, and director of the 2015 smash-hit ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ announced a spinoff is officially in development. Titled ‘Furiosa,’ it is the story story of Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron in the 2015 film) before she teams up with Mad Max (Tom Hardy in 2015.) Set to star in the titular role is Anya Taylor-Joy, who just last year starred in ‘The New Mutants,’ ‘Emma.,’ and Netflix‘s chess hit ‘The Queen’s Gambit.’
‘Fury Road’ was produced by Australian company Kennedy Miller Mitchell and distributed internationally by Warner Bros. This is the case for ‘Furiosa’ as well; Warner Bros. announced the film will release in theaters on June 23, 2023. Also announced in the cast are Chris Hemsworth (Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (‘Aquaman,’ ‘The Get Down.’)
‘Furiosa’ will be directed by Miller, and co-written by Miller and Nick Lathouris, who also co-wrote ‘Fury Road.’ The film’s other writer, Brendan McCarthy, has not been announced to return for ‘Furiosa.’ Another prequel surrounding the character Mad Max–currently titled ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’–is said to also being in the works. ‘Fury Road’ was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 2016, winning six. It was a hit both critically and commercially, so this prequel has the potential to be equally as exciting.
