It’s that time of the year again. The trees are changing, the leaves are falling, and the chilly air is preparing us for some spooky fun. Making it just in time for the witchy season, Emberstorm Entertainment and Fireshine Games’ cozy witch game Reka, is now available for Early Access on Steam. The new indie game invites players to practice witchcraft while doing quests for Baba Yaga. Not to mention building their very own enchanted chicken-legged cottage.

Set in a remote village, players begin their adventure as Reka, learning to master their skill under the legendary witch Baba Yaga. As a new apprentice, you are tasked with learning witchcraft to help uncover Baba Yaga’s mysterious past. Navigating your newfound skill, players can build, forage, and craft elements that will help them customize their very own magical home or haven as some might say.

Building A Home Is Where The Game Shines

The game does a great job of immersing players in a scenic and nature-filled world where there is something to explore in every corner. Whether you’re gathering ingredients, solving quests, or uncovering enigmatic secrets, Reka has a nice balance of exploration and home-building. The game’s art style pairs nicely with the calming yet somewhat spooky environment, further emphasizing its witchy aesthetic. Moreover, exploring and completing quests rewards players with fun items, such as outfits and decor. Building a home is where the game really shine since the various materials and decoration options create a fun home customization gameplay.

Things To Watch Out For

While Reka has its endearing charm, it does contain some frustrating gameplay mechanics, as is expected of an Early Access game. A few flaws include similar visuals when it comes to characters. The lack of an autosave feature, the restriction of a player’s freedom, and a few glitches. Although the art style has its allure, the characters can be a little hard to differentiate from one another. Making completing quests somewhat of a hassle if you forget who the request came from. Similarly, once a player decides that they want to move on to another map. They will not be able to return to the previous one, creating an incomplete side quest. Moreover, the lack of an autosave feature can be an issue for some if they forget to save their game, resulting in lost progress.
