Trailer for A24’s ‘Heretic’ Gives Us An Unexpectedly Creepy Hugh Grant

Based on the trailer for upcoming A24 offering ‘Heretic’ I would guess I’m not supposed to be rooting for Hugh Grant’s character to come out on top but with that beguiling British charm and the fact that the assumed protagonists are door to door religious missionaries attempting to recruit…I don’t know…I’m kind of on his side from the get! In the trailer we see two girls, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East not having a lot of luck getting anyone to give them time for their religious pitch until they happen upon Grant’s character’s house. While at first he seems down to hear the message it soon becomes clear that the girls have gone into the wrong house. It almost seems as though the house becomes a giant mouse trap that had just been waiting for some prey, but the trailer stays pretty vague on that.

Writing/directing duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have strong genre resumes, including writing credits on the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise, and I would love to know how they got rom-com king Hugh Grant on board for a horror film. Whatever magic they worked would have been enough to get me into the theater without a synopsis, but this also looks like a genuinely intriguing, sort of reverse home invasion story as well. Maybe if you are someone who hates an unexpected knock at the door this serves as a bit of a revenge piece as well!

Heretic’ is set to hit theaters November 15, 2024. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!
