Fantastic Fest: Poe Gets Modernized in the First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’

After taking on the works of Shirley Jackson, Henry James, and Stephen King, acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan is channeling Edgar Allen Poe for his next frightening miniseries.

Based on Poe’s iconic short story, ‘The Fall of the House of Usher,’ this adaptation of the same name takes the original tale of familial woe and sets it in modern times. The cast, like many Flanagan productions, is a who’s who of great character actors with the likes of Bruce Greenwood, Mark Hamill Rahul Kohli, and Carla Gugino leading the ensemble.

After hits such as ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’, and the incredible ‘Midnight Mass’, it is safe to say that Flanagan’s latest project will be another emotionally charged descent into familial horror. However, the trailer seems to signify a more slightly meaner, satirical tone than what fans have come to expect from the writer/director. The show’s plot synopsis mentions that the Usher family will have inherited its fortune from corrupt pharmaceutical practices and with a plot point like that, one can only imagine the timely, scathing critiques that Flanagan will fit into this retelling.

The series also marks the last collaboration Flanagan will have with Netflix, with his production company Intrepid Pictures moving to Amazon for all upcoming projects. Based on the footage that’s already been shown, it’s almost guaranteed that ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ will be a fitting farewell for Flanagan and the streaming juggernaut, and fans can stream all eight episodes when the show premieres on October 12th. However if you plan to attend Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX at the end of September you can catch the World Premiere before the show drops on Netflix.
