‘Game of Thrones’ fan favorite turned Mandalorian’ superstar Pedro Pascal has been cast as Joel in ‘The Last of Us,’ HBO Max’s upcoming dystopian adventure/horror series based on Naughty Dog’s popular video game franchise.  Joining Pascal is fellow ‘Game of Thrones’ breakout Bella Ramsey as co-star Ellie.

‘The Last of Us’ follows Joel and Ellie across a ruined United States decimated by disease and overrun with nightmarish creatures.  Joel, a troubled but capable survivor, is hired to escort Ellie, who may play a pivotal role in humanity’s survival.  A tough but conflicted hero accompanying a small, loveable companion through a dangerous landscape?  Sounds like a smooth transition for Pascal.

This is the latest and biggest news for the upcoming series which has been in pre-production for over a year.  Last March, The Hollywood Reporter announced that “the HBO series will cover the events of the original game… with the possibility of additional content..” Future plans for series content covering the game’s sequel and beyond have also been discussed.

‘The Last of Us’ is being helmed by ‘Chernobyl’ creator Craig Mazin, and with that kind of pedigree, prepare for a heavy, atmospheric, and dramatic vibe.  Teaming up with Mazin is the video game’s creative director Neil Druckmann to add authenticity to the adaptation. The show is produced by Naughty Dog, PlayStation Productions, Sony Pictures Television and Word Games.
