After a sixteen-year wait,’The Crow’ is finally ready to seek vengeance once again with an official trailer. The upcoming supernatural fantasy film is based on James O’Barr’s 1989 comic book series of the same name and was first announced back in 2008. Over the years, various actors were in talks to lead the film, including Bradley Cooper, Jason Momoa, Tom Hiddleston, and Luke Evans.
Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell) takes the directors chair for the reboot, which will stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and FKA Twigs.
The storyline follows Draven’s mission to seek revenge after he and his fiancée, portrayed by FKA Twigs, are brutally murdered.
According to the trailer, when someone dies, a crow carries their soul to the land of the dead. Sometimes, the soul cannot rest until justice is served. The trailer hints at a darker and more violent adaptation of ‘The Crow’ compared to previous versions, with Danny Huston playing the primary antagonist. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on August 23rd.
Although technically the fifth film in the franchise, the upcoming reimagining marks the first time that the story of Eric Draven will be retold for a new audience.
‘The Crow’ was initially a critical and financial success, and later gained a cult following. The film’s darkly surreal world was shot entirely on a set, creating an alternate reality dystopia where a man resurrected by a crow takes revenge on the gang that killed him and his fiancée. However, what truly balances the film is the torrent of emotion that runs underneath, particularly pain and loss.
The late Brandon Lee gave a powerful and intense performance in the movie, which could have launched his stardom. Unfortunately, his character’s death in the movie mirrored his tragic death, leaving viewers unsettled. ‘The Crow’ sequels and TV adaptation couldn’t match the original’s impact. Producers have been trying to reboot the series for years and are now making progress after numerous lead role changes.
The upcoming reboot of ‘The Crow’ is set to feature a contemporary retelling of the story, with expected alterations to the original plot. While the main storyline is expected to stay true to the 1994 film and graphic novel, some aspects of the 30-year-old plot may be updated for modern audiences. It remains to be seen whether both old and new fans will embrace this remake and if it will live up to the hype of the original.
