I’ve become accustomed to the point of boredom with big budget horror revisiting tried and true IP in search of a hit…but then I saw this trailer for ‘The First Omen.’ Not only does this trailer evoke the feelings of dread and terror just as the 1976 classic did, it also manages to feel fresh and captivating. Starting with the tagline “To control those who don’t believe, create something to fear” and running all of the action in reverse I was left unsettled and READY for this prequel.
While it is unclear if the plot will be about the birth of original problem child Damien or an even older, darker, force of evil, we can feel fairly sure that nightmares will be created for a new generation. This is the first feature for director Arkasha Stevenson but with episodes of “Brand New Cherry Flavor” and “Channel Zero” under her belt, she is no stranger to doling out the scares.
Stars of the film include: Nell Tiger Free (“Servant”), Tawfeek Barhom (‘Mary Magdalene’), Sonia Braga (‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’), Ralph Ineson (‘The Witch’, ‘Onyx the Fortuitous’), and Bill Nighy (‘Shaun of the Dead’,“Living”).
Synopsis:
When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.
‘The First Omen’ will come to theaters on April 5th 2024
