Dwayne Johnson, or The Rock (‘Moana’, ‘Jumanji’), is bringing the Scorpion King back to the big screen. Though it Johnson appeared as Mathayus in 2001’s The Mummy Returns, it is the 2002 Chuck Russell spinoff that is credited with giving Johnson his first lead role. ‘The Scorpion King’ also spawned four direct-to-video sequels between 2008 and 2018, but Johnson was never involved.
While plot details have not been released, it’s said this new reboot will take place in modern times, as opposed to the 2002 film which takes place 5,000 years before the events of 1999’s The Mummy. Along with Johnson and his company Seven Bucks Films, Hiram and Dany Garcia (‘Jumanji’, ‘Fast & Furious’) are also set to produce. Jonathan Herman, who was Oscar-nominated for his work on the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ original screenplay in 2016, is set to write. The reboot has no title, no release date, and as of yet has no director is attached. It is, however, confirmed that Johnson will only produce, and so a new actor will be cast in the lead role.
