50 years since the release of what many consider to be the scariest movie ever made, comes the next chapter in the ungodly world of ‘The Exorcist.’
After directing the latest Halloween trilogy, David Gordon Green is reviving another horror classic with his sequel to the original titled ‘The Exorcist: Believer.’
Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar® nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil
The return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil might answer some questions to what may have happened after the events of the first film, and overall seems like a good sign for the film’s story. The film also stars Ann Dowd, who played the insidiously friendly Joan in Ari Aster’s ‘Hereditary.’
The original’s theme lurks in the background of the trailer, while the familiar look of Pazuzu’s possession takes hold of the two girls on screen. The trailer raises many questions, especially in regards to the possession of two people at the same time.
Similarly to Green’s ‘Halloween’ 2018 sequel, ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ will be a direct sequel to only the first film from 1973; ignoring the events of the other sequels and prequels of the franchise.
The film is set to release in theaters later this fall, on Friday the 13th in October.
