From the backpacking horror comedy ‘An American Werewolf in London’ to the literal bad trip ‘Midsommar’, the vacation horror movie has become an influential genre of its own. Director Christian Tafdrup looks to add to that canon with ‘Speak No Evil’.

A Sundance crowd pleaser, the film tackles the idea of vacation friends when, “A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.”

The intense trailer has shades of director Michael Haneke’s brilliant ‘Funny Games’, another vacation horror about how politeness in the face of horror isn’t always a great idea. But the trailer paints ‘Speak No Evil’ as a total original and offers just a taste of the horrors to come.

Speak No Evil’ opens in theaters on September 9th and hits Shudder right after on September 15th.
