We are in an indie experimental horror BOOM right now, folks. In the past year, we’ve seen the internet/creepypasta side of things with We’re All Going to the World’s Fair; Skinamarink has lured millions of viewers into the depths of liminal horror since January; and the found footage nightmare descent into hell The Outwaters hits theaters this month. Overall it’s been a good slate and with this recent news, it keeps getting better.

It was announced a few days ago that A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment are collaborating to bring Kane Parsons’ viral analog horror youtube series The Backrooms to the big screen. Parsons is attached to direct but all other details are unknown. The press release is as follows:

“Kane Parsons is a 17-year-old director and VFX artist. His viral found footage YouTube series The Backrooms has amassed nearly 100 million views. Parsons will direct the film over his Summer vacation.”

The Backrooms is a series of short horror films that have become popular for terrifying viewers using liminal spaces and special effects. Skinamarink used similar techniques but The Backrooms leans more into the science fiction territory. Kane Parsons is only 17 but he’s already created a big name for himself in horror, especially at a time when many fans are turning to internet-centric things like The Backrooms or Local58 for their fix.

As for the production side of things, Roberto Patino will be producing and providing the screenplay. Patino is the creator and showrunner of the limited series DMZ, of which he executive produced with Ava Duverney. His past credits include writing and executive producing for Westworld and Sons of Anarchy. In addition, 21 Laps Entertainment has Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine producing. James Wan and Michael Clear are onboard producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster, with Judson Scott executive producing. Chernin Entertainment will co-finance the film with A24.
