Following last year’s viral ‘Skinamarink,’ director Kyle Edward Ball will team up with A24 for his next film, ‘The Land of Nod.’ Ball will write and direct once again, with a global release from A24 to come.

2023’s ‘Skinamarink’ combined lo-fi cinematography and unrelenting dread to become a micro-budget horror sensation. The film grossed over $2 million on a $15,000 budget, with internet buzz cementing Kyle Edward Bell’s status as a director to watch in the horror space. ‘Skinamarink’ also earned the attention of marquee producing teams.

‘The Land of Nod’ will be produced by Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush and Josh Safdie’s Central Pictures, as well as Lawrence Inglee, Daniel Noah and Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision (‘Mandy,’ ‘Color Out of Space,’ ‘A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night’). Tatiana Bears and Bruno Vernaschi Berman also join as producers, with Theo Vieljeux signed on as executive producer.

Plot details for ‘The Land of Nod’ are under wraps. Ball previously shared two ideas for future projects: one was a take on the Pied Piper fairytale, and the other was about “three strangers who all see the same house in a dream.” We’ll have to wait to hear more on whether one of these ideas was developed for ‘The Land of Nod.’

While even we horror lovers at Downright Creepy had a broad range of reactions to ‘Skinamarink,’ we’re undeniably excited to see a filmmaker get the opportunity to break through with broader audiences. It’s the kind of creative risk-taking that deserves to be experienced, and gives the entire genre a boost.
